Street Smartz feat. O.C. & Pharoahe Monch
TRU CRIMINAL 1997
A-side: ‘Problemz’
Underground NYC rap at its steely best.
On an independent roll after firearms ode ‘Ain’t No Burna’ shot up the rap airwaves, Street Smartz cemented their growing status with second single ‘Problemz’. A showcase for teenage lead rapper FT (Fuc That aka Full Time), he talked about his growing pains in relatable detail over Buckwild’s smooth production, sounding much wiser than his tender years. However, most who bought the single, explicitly came for its star-studded B-side – a three-way trade-off that more than lived up to its billing. Over DJ OG’s shook, jagged beat, OC confidently took the first verse, asking listeners to call him Picasso (and pointedly not rhyming it with ‘asshole’). A clearly up-for-it Pharoahe Monch responded with trebly brio, slanging “Vipers, I write the type of shit to make niggas incite race riots” as only he could. It was a hard act to follow but FT confidently brought up the rear, his lack of any equivalent quotables compensated for by his uniquely snarling flow (and a hook about sorting out disputes with some cold hard steel). After leaving Street Smartz, FT contributed tracks to several movie soundtracks (Bones, Rush Hour 2, Friday After Next) and opened for Eminem on his Anger Management 2 tour. He eventually reprised ‘Metal Thangz’ on 2006’s Before The Beginning alongside Nature and Fat Joe. But it’s no match for this.
